Material of Phenolic Cotton Laminate

Paper-based phenolic

Paper-based phenolic consists of a resin binder and kraft paper base. It has good electrical insulating and mechanical properties and machines well. It typically costs less than other phenolic types.

Cloth-based phenolic

Cloth-based phenolic is usually made from resin combined with either linen or cotton canvas. Each option has its benefits and drawbacks. Canvas phenolic often has more mechanical strength than linen, but linen machines more easily. Both canvas and linen phenolic can be designed to have more electrical properties.

Glass-based phenolic

Glass-based phenolic offers the best mechanical strength, heat resistance and electrical properties of all phenolic materials.

Process of Phenolic Cotton Laminate

1

Raw material preparation
Phenolic resin: As a binder, it is used to bond cotton cloth together.
Cotton cloth: As a reinforcing material, it provides mechanical strength and stability.

2

Impregnation
The cotton cloth is immersed in the phenolic resin solution so that the resin can evenly penetrate into the cotton cloth fibers. This step is to enhance the heat resistance and mechanical strength of the cotton cloth.

3

Precuring
The impregnated cotton cloth is preliminarily heated and cured to form a semi-finished product with a certain hardness and stability.

4

Lamination
Multiple layers of precured cotton cloth are stacked together and laminated under high temperature and pressure. This process will completely cure the phenolic resin and tightly bind the layers of cotton cloth together to form an integral sheet.

5

Cooling and trimming
After lamination, the sheet is cooled to room temperature. Then trimming is performed to remove the uneven edges and ensure the dimensional accuracy and flatness of the sheet.

6

Quality inspection
The finished phenolic cotton laminate is quality inspected to check whether its physical and chemical properties meet the standard requirements. For example, test its electrical insulation performance, mechanical strength, heat resistance, etc.

7

Packaging and storage
Qualified products are packaged and stored in a dry and ventilated environment to prevent moisture and damage.

How to Choose a Phenolic Cotton Laminate

‌Water absorption‌
The water absorption of phenolic cotton cloth laminate is an important performance indicator. ‌The lower the water absorption, the better its waterproof performance, and the better its performance in a humid environment. ‌For example, when the water absorption is ≤201mg, it means that the board has good waterproof performance.

‌Dimensional stability‌
Dimensional stability is an important indicator to measure whether the board can maintain its original size and shape under various environmental conditions. ‌Phenolic cotton cloth laminate should have good dimensional stability to avoid shrinkage, deformation, etc. during use.

‌Mechanical properties‌
The mechanical performance indicators of phenolic cotton cloth laminate rods, such as density, water absorption, and bending strength, are also factors that need to be considered when selecting. ‌For example, boards with density ≥1.26g/cm³, water absorption ≤1.7%, and bending strength ≥90Mpa have good mechanical properties and are suitable for use as insulating structural parts in electrical equipment.

‌Application‌
Due to its excellent performance, phenolic cotton cloth laminate can be widely used in building exterior wall insulation systems, mobile homes, cleanrooms, cold storage color steel sandwich panels and other fields. When choosing, you should choose the appropriate board type according to the specific usage scenario.

‌Environmental protection‌
Considering environmental protection and health factors, you should choose phenolic cotton cloth laminate that does not irritate the skin, does not cause any harm to the human body, and releases no toxic smoke when burned.

Q: What is a phenolic laminate?

A: Phenolic Laminates are made by applying heat and pressure to layers of paper, canvas, linen or glass cloth impregnated with synthetic thermosetting resins.

Q: How is laminated cotton made?

A: The fabric is created by fusing a lightweight polyurethane laminate sheet to a cotton fabric's right side. The laminate typically extends across the fabric width (though in some instances it stops about an inch from the selvage), and the resulting textile can be up to 60 inches wide.

Q: What is the process of phenolic resin?

A: Phenolic resins are received from the reaction of phenol and formaldehyde. Resole phenolic resin is formed from high ratio of formaldehyde to phenol. While, novolak phenolic resin is obtained by combining acid catalyst with predominance of phenol.

Q: How is phenolic material made?

A: What Is Phenolic Material? Phenolic material is a composite material produced when layers of fabric are coated with phenolic resin, heated, and put under high pressure. The phenolic resin consists of formaldehyde and phenol, which are bonded together into large molecules.
