What Is SMC Molded Parts?
SMC is a reinforced polyester material that features carbon or glass fibers that are typically an inch or more in length. These long strands of fiber are suspended or spread out in a resin bath made of a mixture of vinyl ester, polyester or epoxy.
The combination of the resin and long fibers produces a strong final product. SMC is typically sold in rolls that can be cut into smaller pieces known as “charges.”
Production of SMC occurs to ensure the fibers and resin are fully integrated. Resin gets applied to a film in the form of a paste. Fibers are then cut and added to the resin.
Next, this mixture is squeezed and compacted between two pieces of film. Once the right texture and thickness is reached, it gets stored for several days. Heat and pressure are then applied in a process called compression molding, which cures the SMC and creates the final product.

How to Prevent Defects in the Production Process of SNC Moldings
After the SMC material is plasticized by heat, the melt viscosity is relatively large. Before the cross-linking and curing reaction is completed, there is not enough time, pressure, and volume to fill the mold cavity with the melt.
The SMC molded material is stored for too long, and styrene evaporates too much, resulting in a significant decrease in the flow performance of the SMC molded material.
The resin paste does not penetrate into the fiber. During molding, the resin paste cannot drive the fiber to flow, resulting in material shortage. For the shortage caused by the above reasons, the most direct solution is to remove these molded objects when unloading.
Insufficient feed causes material shortage. The solution is to increase the feed amount appropriately.
There is too much air in the molding material and many volatiles. Solution: appropriately increase the number of exhaust times; increase the design of the mold vacuum function; appropriately increase the feed area and clean the mold regularly; appropriately increase the molding pressure.
Pressurization is too late, and the molding material has completed cross-linking and curing before it can fill the mold cavity.
If the mold temperature is too high, the cross-linking and curing reaction will be carried out in advance, and the temperature should be appropriately lowered.
Material of SMC Molded Parts
1. Unsaturated polyester resin and crosslinking agents are the main body of SMC. Unsaturated polyester resins are usually polycondensed from unsaturated dicarboxylic acids (or anhydrides), saturated dicarboxylic acids (or anhydrides), and polyols. It has certain mechanical properties and strength, and the internal force is uniform. The crosslinking agent is mainly styrene. After the two are cross-linked, they are the main materials for the curing plasticity of the product, which play the role of connection, support, transmission balance, and protection.
2. The initiator causes the resin and crosslinker to cure and form in the resin paste stage. Its function is mainly to make the resin and the double bond in the cross-linking monomer such as styrene copolymerize so that the SMC can be solidified and formed in the mold cavity.
3. The filler occupies more than one-third of the sheet molding compound and can adjust the viscosity of the molding compound. It generally needs to have the characteristics of low specific gravity, low oil adsorption value, fewer pores, corrosion resistance, and low cost. The commonly used filler components are mainly CaCO3, Al(OH)3, and so on.
4. Thickeners give SMC a high-viscosity, non-sticky property. The preparation of sheet and bulk molding compounds requires a low viscosity of the resin to facilitate the impregnation of the glass fiber and filler by the resin. And compression molding requires a higher viscosity. Therefore, it is necessary to add a thickener before the molding process to convert the low viscosity of glass fiber impregnation into a high viscosity that is not sticky.
5. The release agent prevents the sheet molding compound from having an affinity with the metal mold surface. The release agent can prevent the unsaturated polyester resin from interacting with the surface of the metal mold during the plastic process of the resin mixture. Mainly long-chain fatty acids or salts represented by zinc stearate. Excessive use will easily reduce the performance of the product. The general usage accounts for 1~3% of the total product to ensure the quality of the product.
6. Glass fibers can enhance the corrosion resistance and insulation properties of SMC. Sheet molding compound usually chooses chopped glass fiber mats as reinforcement material. Excessive use will easily make the product too fluffy, and the use of too small a dose will not have an obvious strengthening effect on the product. The general usage is about 20%. In this way, the product can simultaneously meet the two processes of extrusion molding and compression molding.
Inhibitor increases the stability of SMC and prolongs the storage period. Since the initiator styrene will decompose slowly, causing the polymerization of the resin, adding an appropriate amount of free radical scavenger (polymerization inhibitor) can slow down the speed of styrene decomposition and prolong its storage period. Inhibitors are usually benzoquinones and polyvalent phenolic compounds.
How to Maintain SMC Molded Parts
Clean the mold surface and interior regularly
The mold needs to be cleaned before and after SMC molded parts are used. First, use air pressure to remove dust and dirt from the mold surface. Then use a special cleaner to clean the mold surface and interior. Regularly cleaning the mold ensures that the mold remains in optimal condition and reduces damage and wear caused by accumulated dirt and impurities.
Keep the mold surface lubricated
Proper lubricant can reduce wear on the mold surface and reduce friction. The lubricant should be applied thinly on the mold surface to prevent excessive lubricant from entering the mold and affecting product quality.
Regularly check the mold surface and interior
Regularly check the mold surface and interior for cracks, scratches, wear or other damage. Timely detection and repair of these problems can avoid more serious damage and extend the service life of the mold.
Keep the mold in a dry environment
SMC molded parts should be stored in a dry and ventilated environment. An environment with excessive humidity can easily cause rust and corrosion on the mold surface, affecting the service life of the mold.
Avoid mold overloading
When using SMC molded parts, overloading must be avoided. Overloading may cause mold deformation, wear and breakage, causing irreversible damage to the mold.
Replace molds regularly
SMC molded parts also need to be replaced regularly to ensure product quality and production efficiency. The service life of the mold depends on its material, manufacturing process and usage. When the mold surface shows obvious damage or wear, or the product size and shape begin to change, you should consider replacing the mold.
Process of SMC Molded Parts
Setting up the machine
First, the machine needs to be cleaned with a mold cleaner appropriate for the type of molding being performed. The mold cavity surface must then be prepared with a release agent to ensure that the part can be quickly and easily demolded after the molding process is complete. The compression molding machine is then turned on to begin preheating, and the correct molding technology process parameters are set.
Preparing and loading the charge
Next, the mold operator will prepare the charge. First, the appropriate charge amount is measured, as excess material can seep out of the machine, causing flash that must be cut off manually. Typically, the charge is preheated using the heating technology specified for the molding project. It is then placed in the center of the lower half of the heated mold.
Compressing the material
The third step is to compress the mold. The operator closes the top heated mold cavity to the bottom half and applies pressure. Sometimes more heat is added at this stage to soften the raw material and speed up molding. This compression forces the material to fill the entire mold cavity to ensure the product reaches the desired density and accelerates curing.
Releasing the part
The part is then ejected from the molding machine, sometimes with the help of ejector pins. Molding technicians will also finish the part by removing excess resin flash around the edges and cleaning the part before secondary operations or final assembly.
